Seventh grant awarded to Jonesboro Police Department through Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

Jonesboro Police Department’s K9 Rocket will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Rocket’s vest will be embroidered with the sentiment “This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.” Delivery is expected within eight to ten weeks.

These vests are designed to be used in the line of duty to protect K9 officers. The Jonesboro Police Department has 7 active canines, but only three, Cygan, Argus, and Cash, are currently outfitted with ballistic vests. Three other Jonesboro K9s, Gabo, Rico and Loki, have been approved for protective vests and are in production now. Rocket’s vest, once received, will bring the total to 7.

“Our dogs are often the first line of defense. We do a lot of initial tracks on armed suspects and our K9s are the only thing standing between us and the bad guys. Initial tracking is one of the most dangerous jobs you can have, and this vest will help protect him in all aspects of his job.” Officer Jason Myers, Rocket’s handler, said in a statement.

The Department understands the need for this type of safety equipment. A ballistic vest saved JPD K9 Gabo’s life during an incident in December 2018. His replacement vest is currently in production.
